Now anybody with a cell phone can sign up for a Gmail account. Google is sending out text message invites to people who sign up at http://gmail.com/. It looks like the beta testing might be done soon, as their group of testers is growing ever larger.

I’ve been using Gmail for over a year now, and it’s wonderful. I’ve got over 2.5 gigs of space at my disposal — Google encourages it’s mail users to never throw anything away. Treat your email center like a search engine and access your history of correspondence. By the way, it was Gmail’s pending launch that prompted Yahoo and others to up their mailbox sizes a while back.

Another feature of Gmail: your sent messages and responses get linked up in an easy to follow “conversation” format. It’s easier to follow the flow of letters to and from certain contacts.

Plus, really great spam protection and filters.
